The Toyota Production System
Monden, a professor at the University of Tsukuba who was given the opportunity by Ohno to “freely study and write” about Toyota’s production system, continued what Shingo had started by writing down every single detail of every technique in it. And he did it in a way that is almost impossible to digest on first encounter. One dense entry after another in a massive manual left our heads spinning when we first tackled Monden in the early 1980s. Yet in returning to Monden over the years we always find something new that makes the journey worth the effort. This is a vital one-volume library for anyone who wants to truly master the technical aspects of lean thinking. When reading—or re-reading it – consider the irony that many lean thinkers who ran into resistance from the “bean counters” in their organizations, cut their teeth on lean by reading Monden, a professor of managerial accounting!
